About
Donna taught at St John’s Anglican Church Portsmouth for 9 months before teaching at Janati Yoga School in Kingston, Ontario. She earned her teaching certificate with Hang Nhan of Saigon Om in Kingston. Donna is continuing her yoga studies online with Mona Warren at Janati Yoga School in Kingston and other yoga instructors such as Susi Hately from Calgary and Donna Farhi from New Zealand. An important yoga instructor for Donna was Joan Fast from the Lila Centre or Yoga & Relaxation Centre in Kingston with whom she studied for 8 years.
Donna has been quilting for years, and is a founding member of the Kingston Heirloom Quilters. She studied with Diane Berry and the late Margaret Rhodes. She is also a member of the Limestone Quilters Guild, the Cataraqui Guild of Needle Arts, and the Lupins and Lacemakers Guild where she makes bobbin lace. During Covid, she has joined the Hinterland Lacers, a group of Canadian lacers from across the country.
She loves doing hand work be it quilting, embroidery (any kind), or making lace. She recognizes the importance of the sewing machine especially for making charity quilts, touch quilts and those quilts we need made yesterday. Donna believes a quilt entirely made by hand is special even today. She has one queen-sized quilt (shown below - modified Jinny Beyer's "Moon Glow") that she stitched entirely by hand and has helped make the Kingston Heirloom Quilters’ hand stitched group quilts.
The latest exciting quilt just finished in time for our Quilts Kingston 2023 Show, is "Our Canadian Landscape Quilt", pictured below. The Show was a success and the quilt won Best of Show for its category. Hope you got a chance to see it.

"Our Canadian Landscape Quilt", an original design made by the Kingston Heirloom Quilters. You will find the ten provinces and three territories represented in the circle surrounded by sea on each vertical side, the Northern Lights at the top, and the earth at the bottom. If you look closely you will see animals, sea life, and birds quilted in the borders. In the centre of the quilt you will find leaves (mostly pine needles) from the official tree of that province. And of course, maple leaves are in the centre. The techniques used were hand or machine depending on what we were doing. All members of the Heirloom Quilters helped make this wonderful quilt. It is hand quilted.
Do you see "Nova Scotia" that I made?
